LESSON: Armor of God
Shield of Faith
In addition to all this, take up the shield of faith, with which you can extinguish all the flaming arrows of the evil one. Ephesians 6:16 NIV
NOTE: bold used for my emphasis
Ouch!!! Mommmmmy! Do you remember yelling that as a kid? Maybe you just heard a little person scream that very sentence moments ago. I remember every time I went outside, my Mom would say "Be careful out there on that cement." When I was playing, I was only thinking about running and having fun. It was later after my Mom put peroxide on my scabby knees and gave me that "I told you not to be running" look, that I wished I had listened. She was trying to protect me.
Sometimes in this Christian walk we often receive spiritual nicks, cuts, bruises and gashes. Our protection from the "flaming arrows" that cause spiritual wounds is the shield of faith. The Roman soldier's used large or small objects (shields) to protect themselves from the spears and swords of the enemies. We need protection from the enemy. His "flaming arrows" can come in the form of doubt, fear, complacency, unforgiveness, unbelief, hatred, ... just to name a few!
Hebrews 11:1 states "faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen." Faith is our protection (shield) as we wade through the battle field of life's trials and tribulations. The entire chapter eleven of Hebrews is known as the Hall of Faith. Let's look at one of the inductees:
Just then a woman who had been subject to bleeding for twelve years came up behind him and touched the edge of his cloak. She said to herself, "If I only touch his cloak, I will be healed. Matthew 9:20-21 NIV
According to Leviticus 15:19-30, this woman was an outcast because she was considered unclean. She had spent all her money on doctor bills, "but no one could heal her (Luke 8:43)" When she heard that Jesus was near, she could have chosen to stay away from the crowds, but instead she picked up her shield of faith and pressed her way through the crowd.
I can imagine her walk towards Jesus was similar to a battlefield. People probably insulted her. Satan was probably placing doubts in her head about what she was about to do. But she made it, she reached out and touched the hem of his garment.
Jesus turned and saw her. "Take heart, daughter," he said, "your faith has healed you." And the woman was healed from that moment. Matthew 9:22 NIV
As we continue to put on our armor of God, don't forget your shield of faith. Our enemy can be anywhere waiting to wound you .
Be self-controlled and alert. Your enemy the devil prowls around like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour. 1 Peter 5:8 NIV
