LESSON: Armor of God

Helmet of Salvation

Take the helmet of salvation and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God. Ephesians 6:17 NIV

NOTE: bold used for my emphasis

If you confess with your mouth 'Jesus is Lord', and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. Romans 10:9 NIV

People tend to think Romans 10:9 sounds too simple. For the record, there is nothing we can do to earn salvation because it is a gift as a result of God's grace. Our minds often complicate matters. I believe Paul tell us we must put on the helmet of salvation so we can protect our minds from doubting God's plan for salvation.

Before I accepted Christ, I would have classified myself as one of those non-believers who thought "being good" would get you into heaven. This kind of thinking led me from accepting Christ on at least two different occasions.

1992

I had a friend in college who always attended church every Sunday. I noticed she handled situations a little differently than I did (especially those ugly grades and long labs). We became roommates our junior year and I started going to church with her. One day while we were talking, I asked her, what did the preacher mean by saying, "You must be saved?" She told me the verse above. I thought about it for a minute or so. My conclusion was there must be more to it.

1995

The summer of 1995 will be one I won't forget because I was miserable. Interestingly I had become very active in the church I had joined. Basically I was working my butt off trying to be a "good Christian." During July, the church had its annual summer revival. I believe I went to every service that week and every time the preacher sent out the invitation for discipleship I felt this "strange feeling" come over me. I wanted to get up and go to the altar, but once again I thought must be more to this salvation thang!

Almost three weeks after the revival, I woke up from a strange dream. I have no idea what the dream was about to this day, but I woke up in tears. As I laid there in the bed, I finally heard Jesus knocking and I answered. It suddenly occurred to me that "Jesus" was VERY REAL! He paid the price for my sins! How could I not accept his gift? I got up from my bed and picked up my bible and read Romans 10:9. It was so simple, but at the same time mind boggling. My situations did not change, but I began to change.

Praise the Lord! If we had to work our way into heaven, NONE of us would make it there. "Jesus paid it all, all to him I owe, sin had left a crimson stain, he washed me white as snow!"

Life is one bumpy road after another, do you have on your helmet of salvation?
