LESSON: Armor of God

Extra Accessory

And pray in the Spirit on all occasions with all kinds of prayers and requests. With this in mind, be alert and always keep on praying for all the saints. Ephesians 6:18 NIV

Paul gave us six pieces of spiritual armor:

  1. belt of truth
  2. breastplate of righteousness
  3. feet fitted with gospel-sharing readiness
  4. shield of faith
  5. helmet of salvation
  6. a sword, the word of God.

Before he concluded his letter to the church of Ephesians, Paul included one last accessory. It is not included with the armor, but it is just as important. Prayer. In order for us to know God's will, we need to communicate with Him.

In Matthew 6:5-15, Jesus taught the disciples how to pray. The prayer in verses 9-13 have become known as the Lord's Prayer or the model prayer. It is helpful to understand this model prayer to help us in our own lives.

Our Father which art in heaven, Hallowed be thy name (vs.9). We must recognize who God is and the name of God must be honored.

Thy Kingdom come. Thy will be done on earth, as it is in heaven (vs.10). His kingdom will someday be recognized by everyone. We must pray that His will is performed on earth.

Give us this day our daily bread (vs.11). God will supply all our needs.

And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors (vs.12). We must pray for the forgiveness of our sins. As we receive forgiveness of sins from God, we are able to forgive others.

And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory (vs.13).   God will keep us from evil, We cannot fail to recognize his true character - He is an awesome God.
