Getting Started

1. Bible Study

In order to become a serious Christian, you must become involved in serious bible study. God has a message for us and we will not know what it is until we begin to study His Word. Just how important is Bible Study to you as a  believer in Jesus Christ? Let's let the Bible itself answer that question: "It is written, 'Man shall not live by bread alone, but on every word that proceeds out of the mouth of God.'" Matthew 4:4 (NIV)

Humans are made up of two major parts: PHYSICAL and SPIRITUAL. We know we need to eat food in order for our physical bodies to survive. We often forget we need to provide nourishment for our spirits as well. In order to live healthy spiritual lives we must feed on God's Word.

If you have just accepted Christ recently you are considered a NEWBIE CHRISTIAN.

"...for you have been born again not of seed, which is perishable but imperishable, that is, through the living and abiding word of God...'The word of the Lord abides forever'...like newborn babes, long for the pure milk of the word, that by it you may grow in respect to salvation..." 1 Peter 1:23-2:2 NIV

A Christian's goal should be to become a MATURE CHRISTIAN. This is a life-long process. The sign of a MATURE CHRISTIAN is there willingness to strengthen their faith and relationship with God. Bible study provides Christians with a weapon against the devil, encourage us and gives us strength to continue in this race. MATURE CHRISTIANS make it a point to prepare themselves for Jesus' return through constant prayer, daily bible study, service in the church and community, witnessing and many other capacities that God can use individuals.

"...Be dressed ready for service and keep your lamps burning, like men waiting for their master to return from a wedding banquet, so that when he comes and KNOCKS they can immediately open the door for him...You also must be ready, because the Son of Man will come at an hour when you do not expect him." Luke 12: 35-36, 40 NIV

We would also like to suggest you find a bible translation you enjoy reading. Some other tools you might want to invest in are commentaries, concordances, .... a good ole notebook and pencil!

You are probably asking how do I get into the habit of reading the bible regularly? Consider purchasing or finding a daily devotional book. Also find a daily bible reading plan that works for you. The best bible reading plans let you read from the Old and New Testament each day. Here are some sites with devotions:

2. Prayer

Prayer is simply a conversation with God. It is NOT time just to bring forth our requests (or supplications). It is important that we have a quiet time alone so that we can listen to God. A simple and popular acronym to follow is called ACTS.

A = adoration C = confession T = thanksgiving S = supplications

3. Fellowship with Believers

We can't live the Christian life alone. We need the support of fellow believers, especially mature believers in Christ.

Let us not give up meeting together, as some are in the habit of doing, but let us encourage one another–and all the more as you see the Day approaching. Hebrews 10:25 NIV

If you have not already, spend a few Sundays in search of a good church home. Once you find one, become apart of the community. If you can fit into your schedule Sunday School and/or bible study during the week - JUST DO IT! You will appreciate the support and chance to learn more about God's word with other folks just like you!

When you can't get to a bible study, be sure to check out one of the greatest resources online, OnePlace.com. You can listen to some great Christian radio ministries online. STAY IN THE WORD AS MUCH As POSSIBLE!!!
